I've been mainlining Avatar: The Last Airbender for going on three weeks now. I'm about halfway through the 3rd season -- last night I watched through "The Western Air Temple." And I had thoughts! That I wanted to blather on about! )

Speaking more generally about the series, this is the first time I've really given a chance to an animated series, and was happily surprised to love it so much. I'm trying to parcel out the episodes remaining to me because I don't want it to be over, but now I get to look forward to Korra! (And figure out how I can watch it, since I don't get Nickelodeon.)

Decided to store and update this post here instead of LJ.

I made it just under the wire with my goal of 50 books in 2009 and fell one short of my goal of 25 movies. Seems about right to set the same goals for this year!

Now this brought a much-needed smile to my face:

Scully
Thanks so much, everyone, for the sympathy in my last post. I just got back from my meeting with the vet. She understood my unwillingness to go with any aggressive treatments. Instead, Scully will get an anti-inflammatory pill that's supposed to slow the growth of the tumor, give her a little more time. The drug's side effects can be intestinal upset, but on the other hand, it'll also be really good for her arthritis, so that's a bonus!

She could have as little as two months or she could be one of those lucky dogs that keeps chugging along for up to a year on that drug. My wish is that she'll make it to spring, when the farmers' market opens again in mid-April, because she loves going there so much and the people there love her.

That sweet dog in my icon was diagnosed with bladder cancer yesterday. I'm meeting with the vet tomorrow to talk about what the options are, but I've already been told that any treatments are not a cure, but just a matter of adding months onto her life. The question for me will be whether the treatment would make her so miserable that it wouldn't be worth it, just for a few extra months.

She's 14 years old (best guess), so I knew that losing her was coming up down the road one way or another, but it's still so hard to have it become a much more immediate reality.

For now, though, she seems to be feeling fine -- just as active and alert as ever (when it comes to her old-dog-years energy level, anyway).

So, Smallville )

And Fringe, too )
LRH You are here
Last night I had stepped out of the room during commercials on the CW, but I heard Clark say something about how he had woken up in a world of darkness and evil, and I peered out in time to perceive that Clark woke up in an AU in which he had been raised by Lionel Luthor. Oh hey, I already wrote that story! Smallville's only just now getting around to it?

It's been ages since I watched Smallville, but I may have to tune in to see what they do with it. I didn't spy Lex in what I saw of the preview, so it's already bound to be very different from my fic. (To start with, in my story, it was Lex going on about how he woke up in a world of darkness and evil.)

Lost Team Jacob
As of a couple days ago (that I know of), LiveJournal seems to have wiped out all my tags except for on the two most recent entries. I checked, and I can't find anything under paid account features that says this will happen if I don't pay up. And under my user info, it says I have 80 tags, but when I click on the link, all that's there is a list of number of uses -- with no accompanying tag or hyperlink.

Does anyone else have this problem right now?
DW Romana
I've got commentfic fever! Well, I've now written two fics in one week, which is quite feverish for me. This time, it was for this:

But I didn't write about River and Amy, that's just the DW banner they've got. :)

Title: Art History
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: PG
Word count: 1184
Prompt: Donna Noble and Romana, traveling light
Summary: Donna finds some company for a daylong holiday from a holiday.

Take a little (illustrated) tour of the Louvre )

So, about that scene in the cafeteria...

Charmed Chris buh
Wow, I've committed fic! There was something freeing about participating in a comment ficathon. I read the prompt and got the idea at lunch, and wrote it that same evening, not able to put it off for fear of losing the prompt to someone else. As it turned out, I'm the only one who's responded to a prompt so far, so it looks like the speed was unnecessary in that sense, but it certainly freed me from my tendency to fret more than write. And maybe the fic isn't a masterpiece, but I kind of like it. Enough to save a (slightly edited) copy here for posterity.

Title: The Limitations of Wishes
Fandom: Charmed
Rating: G
Word count: 667
Prompt: Chris and Leo, forgiveness
Summary: To feel the anger lifted is to feel like himself again. (Leo after the wish in "I Dream of Phoebe.")

In no small way, it is a relief )
Fringe Peter & Walter

I've thrown in prompts, but I'm going to actually try writing something too! Oooo, wouldn't that be novel?

As my summer TV Test Drive winds to a close, I'm still catching up with S3 Chuck, so I know naught of the current season. It hasn't captured me as much as the other two shows I tried, but it's light fun and at this point I think I'll probably keep watching.

But the Test Drive has paid off in that now there are new episodes of things airing right now and I can watch them right now! Woo! Something of a gearshift to have to sit through ads now, though. :)

Brief thoughts...

On The Vampire Diaries )

On Fringe, OMG! )
Fringe Peter & Walter
I meant to do this as soon as I finished watching Fringe, but kept forgetting, and now I'm doing it when I have barely the time to do so. But I wanted to get this done before the weekend:

So, Fringe fans, anyone got any recs? Fanfic, fanvids, meta, anything else fun? And please point me to your own stuff! I would have scrolled past it on my friends list before, not knowing the fandom. (For fanfic, I'm mostly interested in gen, but I'm willing to give ship fic a try if it's recommended.)

I'll pass on a rec myself, as long as I'm here. I heard about it from [personal profile] grimorie, and I loved it as well: Split Up Six Ways, a Walter fanvid by [personal profile] beccatoria.

Gotta run. I'm going to be gone without Internet access for the weekend, so I won't be replying right away. But I'd love to come back to lots of fun things to check out. And now I'm back to packing for summer camp (seriously).
Fringe team
So, the summer TV Test Drive has been going well. The Vampire Diaries earned a place in my fall TV schedule, even though certain things peeved me at the end of the first season. After that modest success came Fringe, which took a little time to gain some traction and then completely colonized my fannish brain. (Check it out -- I have an icon! I tell you, you don't feel the pinch of discontinuing the paid LJ account and losing the icon spaces until you get a shiny new fandom.)

The final candidate was supposed to be Chuck. That's three seasons to get through, and I'm running out of time. Plus, see above, re: colonized brain. I'm not feeling motivated to move on, and I'm especially not feeling motivated to be all systematic and start from the pilot and go episode-by-episode, like I've been doing. What to do?

I need to be sold on taking on Chuck, but, more crucially, I need some help narrowing it down. So here's a plea to any Chuck fans on the flist: What episodes would you recommend to give me a taste of the show? Ones that are representative and stand on their own well enough that I won't be too confused.

Then, if those convince me I want to watch more, I may come back and ask for advice on selecting episodes that will get me most quickly up to speed before the season premiere. (Though, to be honest, I have no idea if Chuck follows an ongoing plot arc that requires getting up to speed.)

Finally, Peter knows. Thank God -- the tension was killing me!

One step up, a thousand steps back )

Just four more S2 episodes to go, and then I have to wait for a new season along with everyone else. How sad. But at least I'll have less time to wait?

I didn't get to Fringe yesterday after all, but now I've watched through the one-two punch of Jacksonville and Peter, which were both terrific. And now I know so much more than I knew before! )
Lost Jacob is unsympathetic
Still moving along with Fringe. Cut for spoilers, length, whichever )

As of this writing, I've watched up through 2x13 What Lies Below, so please no spoilers past that point. Merci!
